Wednesday, December 7. 1966 THE ROCKETEER Page 3 Rockets Set Two New Records After clashing with the Sanford Yellow Jackets, the RHS Rockets completed the ’66 football season, during which they set two major team records. Scoring 326 points during the regular season of play, the Rockets broke their former total scoring record of 253 points. They also snapped their former single game high record of 45 points by rack ing up 54 points against Chapel Hill. During the season, the Rockets altered many of last year’s statis tics. The following is a comparison of these two years’ statistics: Statistic ’66 Season ’65 Season Wins-Losses 9-1 9-1 First Downs 164 150 Yards Rushing 1964 2734 Total Yardage 3137 2734 Passes Attempted 165 142 Passes Completed 68 80 Passes Intercepted 18 17 Total Points 326 253 Single Game High 54 42 Average Points Per Game this season 32.6 25.3 The Rockets’ leading scorer and second leading scorer in the conference was Johni Blanks who chalked up 72 points. Leading rusher was Johnny Bradsher with 8.4 yards and leading pass re ceiver was David Rudder with 24 receptions. Joe David Sparks booted a Rocket record of 38 extra points. Freshmen Football Ends Season With 3 Wins, 3 Losses Roxboro’s freshman football team ended its season with an even record of three wins and three losses. When asked about this Coach James Edens said, “I am disappointed because our record was no better than it was, but we had a hard working group of boys.” The Baby Rockets defeated Henderson once and Orange Jr. High twice for their three wins. Their three losses were to Hend erson twice and George Wash ington of Danville once. Some of the outstanding fresh men players, who are suspected to help the J. V.’s and maybe varsity next year are: Mark Slaughter, Scott Pollock, Barry Walker, Eddie Talbert, and Rickie Long. “Though there were other good players on the team,” Coach Edens said, “these were probably the best.” Football Team Feted With Steak Dinner The RHS football team was honored at a steak dinner on Monday night at Turner’s Steak House. The supper was given by Mr. G. C. Fleig. Before the Chapel Hill game, Mr. Fleig announced that if Roxboro won the game, there would be a steak dinner for everyone on the team. The Rockets won the game and also broke a scoring record. Attending the dinner with the football team were Mr. John Morris, head coach; Mr. Larry Dixon, interior linemen coach; Mr. Reid Davis, end coach; Dr. G. W. Gentry, Jr. and Dr. Don ald Bradsher, team doctors; Mr. Stony Stonebraker, who does the play-by-play for Rocket foot ball; and the managers of the team Andy Riley, Darrell Coates, Donald Riley, and Michael Wheeler. Roxboro Receives Honors In District Roxboro High School walked away with individual honors af ter the balloting of the District 3 coaches. Quarterback Johni Blanks was named “most valuable player” in the District 3 Conference. Coach John Morris was named “coach of the year.” Five boys were named to the all-conference team. Captain, Johnny Bradsher was the first choice for halfback. In the end position, David Rudder will be the guy to watch when the ball is run. Forrest Blayney, the only junior to be named to the squad, was the choice for guard. Quar terback Johni Blanks will pace this great team- Named to the second team as tackle was Doug Fleig. Is Girls' Basketball Dead? Participation in girls’ basketball on the high school level has greatly decreased. Where basketball among the girls used to be a very enthusiastic sport, today, it is almost extinct. There has been a noticeable drop in the number of girls trying out for the teams. Basketball for the girls has decreased partly, be cause the daily practice which is required for the sport is considered too strenuous for a girl’s energy reserve. School boards which have condemned girls’ bas ketball say that girls are not fit enough physically for playing four quarters of eight minutes each. They say that the allotted time is too long for girls to play such an energetic sport, since only a short time is given between each quarter. In condemning the sport the boards also point out that girls are too emotional in a contact sport such as basketball. Tempers seem to flare very quickly and much unfriendly rivalry has been seen. However, there are still many girls who show much interest in the sport. Many of these believe that only until the last girl has discontinued her participation in basketball, will the entire sport of girls’ basketball be dead. Every teenage girl needs a phone in her room to receive those special calls. The Princess phone with its graceful lines fits this need perfectly as Janice Kirby will agree. This Christ mas ask Santa for a Princess phone for YOUR room! Rocket Squad Shapes Up; Season Opens Dec. 6 The RHS Rockets began their basketball season last night with an opening game against Reids ville. In answer to a question about how the Rockets would shape up for this game as well as the entire season, Head Basketball Coach, Jim Edens replied, “We will be short and slow, with our tallest men at about six feet two inches tall. Despite this, we are looking forward to this season in hopes of bettering our eight wins and eleven losses of last year” Coach Edens went on to com ment that in the way of hard opposition for the Rockets this year would be Chapel Hill and Jordan. He described both of these teams as being “tall, strong, and good.” Most of Chapel Hill’s boys stand six feet seven inches and six feet eight inches tall. Garner, a newcomer to the Rockets’ 3-A conference has a reputation for being a tough team to beat and should also prove to be tough opposition for the Rockets to face. Men coming back from the ’65-66 season to support the Varsity team with their experi ence are Johnny Bradsher, Joe Schull, Johni Blanks, Billy Crabtree, Carroll Rogers, and Charles Rudder. Experienced players from last year’s J.V. team appearing again this season as varsity prospects “Say, Doug, I think that shirt you’re buying will look great on you. Aren’t you glad you decided to stop in MASSEY’S today?” Doug Riley and Virginia Shipman shopped at MASSEY’S just the other day and found just what they wanted. Why don’t you stop in MASSEY’S soon, too and see if you won’t be glad you did! are Cleve Buchanan, Ronnie Sheppard, Keith Hall, Loge Jackson, Ted Blalock, and Victor Williford. As promising Varsity prospects coming up from last year’s Freshman team are Charlie Maultsby, Doug Latta, Larry Holeman, Rob Fitzgerald, Reid Morrison, Larry Newton, and Martin Vernon. Not knowing the possibilities of RHS boys who played for Bethel Hill last year, Coach Edens could not comment on their possible contributions to the teams. As for this year’s Freshmen team, Coach Edens believes it to be “one of the best looking Freshmen teams in a long time, with plenty of height.” Jimmy Wilkins, Barry Walker, and Mark Slaughter are some of the fine prospects for this team. With a new gym to hold the crowds and with the help of all the boys coming in and the ones already playing, Coach Edens predicts that in one or two years RHS will be back in the basket- ball standings.
